1906 The Library, Adelbert College, CLEVELAND OH

Western Reserve College’s name changed. In 1892, Amasa Stone donated a sizable fund of money to the institution. As a result of this gift, Western Reserve College became Adelbert College of Western Reserve University. Adelbert was the name of Stone’s son. In 1967, Adelbert College and Case Institute of Technology merged, creating modern-day Case Western Reserve University. [SOURCE]

1946 Albertson Public Library, ORLANDO FL

Captain Charles L. Albertson, a retired Police Inspector of New York City, and a winter resident of Orlando, had for many years been collecting books at his home in Waverly, New York. In November 1920, Captain Albertson offered his collection to the City of Orlando, on the condition that it furnish a suitable building to house it. The contract between the city of Orlando and Captain Albertson provided that Orlando would accept the gift of the Albertson collection and furnish the library building; that the library should be known as the Albertson Public Library; that Captain Albertson should be Advisory Superintendent of the Library throughout his lifetime; and that Orlando should suitably maintain the Library. "Low Memorial Library was opened for use in 1897, the gift of President Low. The architectural style is classical, based on Roman precedents, but with many suggestions of Greek refinements in its details. It holds a commanding position on the brow of the hill at Morningside Heights."

[LIB1850] The Milwaukee Public Library dates to 1878 when the State Legislature on Feb. 7 authorized the City to establish a public library. But the library can trace its lineage back further, to 1847 and the organization of the Young Men's Association, a subscription library which collected dues from its members. The group rented space for its library in a number of locations over the years and expanded into sponsoring a lecture series with such important speakers as Horace Mann, Horace Greeley and Ralph Waldo Emerson.
