1910 Birchard Library, Fremont, Ohio


[LIB6408] - On June 3, 1874, Birchard Library opened its doors to the public in a building on Front Street. Containing 1,683 volumes of the 5,000 books ordered by Hayes, patrons could borrow books only if they were 14 years or older and deposited a bond or $3.00. The Rutherford B. Hayes Library, Fremont, Ohio


A museum occupies two floors in this building, where personal items from the lives of President and Mrs. Hayes are exhibited. There is also a research library from the Hayes period in American history, containing thousands of books and manuscripts. [From the back of the card]

Birchard Library, Fremont, Ohio

[LIB0216] - “Sardis Birchard has conveyed real estate and other property to the value of $50,000 in trust to establish in Fremont a Library…for the free use and benefit to the people of Sandusky County.” With these words, Rutherford B. Hayes announced his uncle’s generous bequest to the City Council in July of 1873. President Hayes not only gave the money, but also supervised the founding of the library and served as chairman of the Board of Trustees until his death. 1940s Hayes Memorial Library, Fremont OH

Honoring the memory of Rutherford B. Hayes, 19th president, the Hayes family established a presidential library, the first in the United States. Opened in 1916, this library preserves President Hayes' 12,000-volume personal library along with arcihval material from his military and political career, particularly his presidency (1877-1881). Over the years, the staff has expanded the collection to over 70,000 books which reflect Hayes' special interests, including genealogy and local history, and the Gilded Age period in which he lived.
