Carnegie Library, Santa Cruz, California

[LIB10965] - This building was built in 1903, with a $20,000 grant of Carnegie funds. It was the main branch of the Santa Cruz Public Libraries, and later became the headquarters for the city/county library system. The front of the library faced the gardens at Santa Cruz City Hall across Cedar St., although this piece of Cedar St. and the present City Hall weren't there until 1937. The Main Library building was considered to be too small as early as 1953, and it was demolished to make way for the present Downtown Branch in 1966. When built in 1903, the building's address was 52 Church St. (Most addresses in Santa Cruz were renumbered between 1947 and 1950, when this building became 224 Church St. [Website]

Public Library, Santa Cruz, California

[LIB9839] - The main library, an imposing edifice designed by architect William Weeks, was demolished to make way for a modern building as were several branch libraries. Only the Garfield Park Library, built in 1914, and the Seabright library, which now serves as the Natural History museum, are still in existence. [http://www.santacruzpl.org/history/articles/31/]

1956 Faye G. Belardi Memorial Library, Felton, CA

[LIB3602]

The structure that is now the Felton Branch Library was built as the Presbyterian Church in Felton in 1893. Constructed in a traditional, New England style the building served the Presbyterians until 1955, when a larger facility was built nearby.

The vacant building was then purchased by Nick and Faye G. Belardi with the intent of dismantling the structure and building a family home on the site. Negotiations for purchasing the building were underway when Mrs. Belardi was killed in an auto accident in August of 1955. Following Mrs. Belardi's death, Mr. Belardi offered the building and site to the community as a memorial to his wife. Renovated by March 1956, the Faye G. Belardi Memorial Library was formally opened on April 15, 1956.

The Felton Branch celebrated its 50th anniversary in April, 2006. At 116 years of age, this is the oldest branch building in the City-County Library System and is a major landmark in the town of Felton, California. [SOURCE]
