Carnegie Library, Danville, Indiana, 1910

LIB973207

The Danville Public Library began in 1902 on a lot at the corner of Marion and Indiana Streets in downtown Danville. Being the county seat, and having Central Normal College already established, local businessmen felt it was time for a public library to serve both the students of the college and citizens of the community. Philanthropist Andrew Carnegie offered to help communities build libraries with grant money and Danville was able to secure one to build the library. The Danville Public library was the first of four Carnegie libraries that were built in Hendricks County. After receiving the Carnegie grant, construction on the building began in September of 1902 and was completed in June of 1903. They began with a collection of approximately 1,000 books to lend to patrons that were either purchased by the ladies club or donated by local citizens. To keep current they also subscribed to the leading magazines in the country at that time. https://dplindiana.org/library-history/

Library, University of Pennsylvania, 1910

LIB359761

In 1910, the University of Pennsylvania Library was a well-established institution, having been founded over a century earlier in 1750. At that time, the library was located in a building known as the Furness Library, which had been designed by the renowned architect Frank Furness and completed in 1891.

The University of Pennsylvania Library was one of the largest academic libraries in the United States, with a collection of over 500,000 volumes and a staff of librarians and assistants to assist patrons with research and reference needs. The library's collection included books, periodicals, manuscripts, maps, and other materials, and was organized into subject-specific collections to facilitate research and scholarship.

In addition to its collection and research services, the University of Pennsylvania Library also offered a variety of programs and events to promote reading and learning on campus. These included lectures, book clubs, and exhibits of rare books and manuscripts.

Throughout the 20th century and beyond, the University of Pennsylvania Library continued to grow and expand, incorporating new technologies and expanding its collections and services to meet the changing needs of the academic community. Today, the library is still in operation and remains an integral part of the University of Pennsylvania's academic and research programs.

1910, Carnegie Library, Coshocton, Ohio

[LIB11209] - The Coshocton Library Association started in 1872 as a subscription library. Over the years, it evolved into a free public library. The trustees of the Coshocton Free School Library solicited a grant from Andrew Carnegie in 1902. Carnegie agreed, and a lot was chosen at Chestnut and 4th streets. This was the 1000th library to be built with Carnegie funds. It was designed by E.W. Hart of Columbus, and is constructed of granite-colored pressed brick, with a red tile roof. The main level was originally home to the book collection, while the upper floor was designed as an auditorium and the basement was used for various meeting rooms.
