Library, Peterborough, New Hampshire
[LIB6017] - The Peterborough Town Library enjoys the distinction of being the first public library in the United States to be supported by tax dollars.
In 1833, when the library was established, Peterborough residents must have recognized that they were creating more than just a building. They were affirming the role of libraries in creating and fostering community, and they understood that a library accessible to the public would be crucial to the educational, cultural, and economic development of the town.
